Major blog shakedown!

January 5, 2011

That's right, sports fans. There's some major blogshift going down here.

You longtime Irvania.com readers out there may be aware that my web site, in its various incarnations, has been around since the summer of 1995, and during that entire time there have only ever been two areas within the whole web site that used software I didn't write myself: the Blog section, and the Discussion Forum, both of which I introduced to the Irvania.com domain in February 2007.

Voltoon knows I've ranted often enough about the hassles of using third-party software on Irvania.com, mostly involving the piles of spam I have to shovel through every day. The Wordpress software I'd been using for the blog section generates a ton of spam every day in the form of comments (sometimes as many as 30 a day, and that's just the ones that made it past the spam filters), all of which went straight to the to-be-moderated queue, where I deleted it. The YABB bulletin board software I'm using for the Discussion Forum gathers spam in the form of new user accounts created automatically by spambots, usually between 3 and 10 every day, which I also have to delete.

To summarize, I haven't been happy with the Blog section or the Discussion Forum. There has been some participation from those of you out there who are genuine readers (many thanks, folks!) and not spambots (curse you, spam-laden vermin!) in both the Blog and the Forum, but frankly, it's getting harder and harder for me to sort out genuine for-real communications from you, the good guys, and the bad stuff (a lot of which is automatically generated) from the bad guys. The spammers are getting craftier at what they do.

Here's the deal: the old Blog section, the one I've been using since early 2007 and which uses the Wordpress software package, is broke. I don't know if the Russian spammers finally succeeded in knocking it out, or if something else is the matter with it, but it's been out for a couple of weeks now. You can still read all my blog entries, but I can't post new entries or do any administative tasks.

Soooooooooo, I just figured the easiest thing for me to do was to re-write the entire Blog section myself, including only the features I wanted and leaving out all the stuff I didn't want. This, what you're looking at now, is the result. It's simpler, it works better, and it fits in with the look and feel of the rest of Irvania.com, except for the Discussion Forum, which I'll tackle some other time.

Aside from all the work involved in me shuffling all the old articles from the old Wordpress version to the new Dave-generated version, there's one feature that the old Blog had that this one doesn't, that y'all might miss:

There's no ability to leave comments or feedback on the Blog entries, as it stands now. Until I figure out exactly how I want to handle comments, you can still send me feedback via e-mail (click on the "Contact Dave" button on the taskbar at the top of this page if you don't already have my e-mail address).

As far as the issue of me actually posting new updates in a more timely and regular manner (koff koff koff) we'll just have to see about that.
