Political discussions on Irvania.com

January 13, 2011

If you're a longtime reader of this web site you may have noticed that there has never been any political content here. Over the past few years, several people have asked me about posting political content or discussing politics on Irvania.com.

There is one big reason I don't want to do that: no matter what stance you take, political discussion always alienates a big portion of your intended audience. Especially in today's emotionally-charged climate, if you express opinions on one side of the fence or the other, you're likely to drive off people who hold opposing views. You're also likely to drive off a number of people who don't hold opposing views, but who are annoyed at the partisan discussion on what's supposed to be a fun, light-hearted, entertaining web site.

Rest assured, I do hold strong opinions about such matters. I made the choice to avoid discussing those views on Irvania.com, and I shall continue to stick by that decision. I'd rather keep my views to myself than risk alienating readers who would otherwise enjoy what I have to offer here on Irvania.com.

There is another reason to avoid political content here: it doesn't age well. Regardless of where the content falls on the political spectrum, chances are pretty good that it'll look pretty out-dated ten or fifteen or twenty years from now. Goodness knows I don't want anything that looks out-dated on my web site.

And here's another good reason: the Internet is a world-wide communication platform. People from all over the world read this web site, and people from other countries just aren't interested in hearing about the squabbles between the two main political factions in this wonderful nation of ours.

Having said all that, I do respect your political views, whatever they may be. No matter which side of the political fence you're on, I feel strongly that you have a right to your beliefs. Whether you support the King, or you support our new zombie overlords, let's keep the political discourse going. Just not here, that's all.
