In 2002 or so I decided to get out of game design in order to concentrate on my fiction writing, but I'm keeping these old game designs of mine available since I know they are still of interest to a lot of you out there. I'll keep them here online as long as web space and bandwidth are plentiful here at Irvania.com.
These are all free downloads, provided on an "as is" basis, with no promises of support, functionality, accuracy, playability, completeness, or usefulness. Some have documentation, some don't, several are in various stages of nonfinishedness. I'll never get around to finishing most of these projects, so do with them what you will. There are many other projects that aren't even as far along as these, but I haven't the heart to dig them out and inflict them upon the world.

Treads & Turrets
My first computer-assist wargame design, started in 1982. This version is from around 1984. Based closely on the old Tractics rules. 133K, zipped archive of program, source code, and lots of documentation.

Tankbase 1990
This started out as an update and major revision of Treads & Turrets. Slightly less ancient user interface, more tanks, most of the original T&T rules replaced with new game mechanics. The tank stuff mostly works but the infantry, artillery, and air sections are barely started. This is what I was working on when I got called up for Desert Storm in 1990. 185K, zipped archive of program, source code, and data files. No scenarios or documentation.

Tankbase 1994
This is the version of Tankbase we ran at Historicon in July 1994. Due to problems with the main project, this version was thrown together from scratch in two weeks in order to meet the deadline for the convention. It's hard-wired for this specific scenario and falls into the "it's a miracle it even works" category. 156K zipped archive of program, source code, data and scenario files. No docs.

panzer3.zip
Panzer III
One of my experiments with manual (non-computer-assist) WWII tank rules. Includes charts and partially-completed rulebook. The tank-to-tank combat worked pretty well for early WWII, but the infantry part of the game didn't work so well. 398K, zipped archive of MS Word files.

Death Before Distemper
Platoon-level component of Generic Legions 2.0, used for campaign games. Good for large battles with up to a couple of battalions on a side. We used these rules with reasonably good success in a campaign in 2002 (Bad Days versus D'Orques). 108K zipped archive includes rules sections and sample battalions for DRS Earthies and Squishies.

fefp.zip
Fallen Empires, Fallen Pants
First shot at a strategic campaign system set in the Generic Legions universe. Inspired by the sector generator program I wrote for Traveller back in 1987 (see the Referee Utility Bundle listed below). The program, mostly written while I was watching an episode of Mystery Science Theatre 3000, generates a game "galaxy" based on user-settable size parameters and allows you to print out a hardcopy of the galaxy map. The program is used only to generate the strategic map before the game. Crude but effective. 289K zipped archive includes program, source code, and several sample galaxies.

glcav11.zip
Generic Legions (Computer Assisted Version)
The very first incarnation of Generic Legions, and the last version of GL to be computer-assisted. 206K zipped archive includes program, source code, scenario and unit data files. I never did get around to writing documentation for this one.

spacedust.zip
Space Dust
Simple one-page spaceship miniature rules for fast, large fleet actions. This is a variant of the original Space Dust rules created by Bill Patterson and myself in 1982. Flashbacks of hundreds of tiny spaceship miniatures scattered across the barracks room floor. 5K zip of MS Word document.

napachat.zip
Napoleon at Chattanooga
Boardgame of Napoleon's famous campaign in the Tennessee Valley, conquest of the Solar System, and an armoured regiment named Bob. Some assembly required. My most successful boardgame. 420K zipped archive includes maps, counters (must be glued to cardstock and cut out), charts, rulebook, and errata.

sfbbucce.zip
SFB-BUCCE
The Bloomsburg University Chess Club Edition (BUCCE) of TFG's SFB, programmed in 1990. 118K zipped archive includes program, source code, ship data, and documentation.

Three utilities in one 1987-vintage program: character generator for SPI's Commando, character generator for GDW's Traveller (classic version), and world/sector generator for Traveller. 46K zipped archive includes program, source code, and brief documentation.

SB4 1.2
Shipbase IV
Shipbase IV, originally thrown together in a couple of months in mid-1993 and intended to cover naval combat from antiquity through to about 1895, where SB3 picks up. This is version 1.2. Several bugs fixed, nations added, scenario utility and ship database utility added. Scenarios for Lissa 1866 and Yalu 1894 are included. Still includes the original SB4 testbed gunnery system, based somewhat on TCS's Age of Iron, to be completely replaced in 2.0. 165K zipped archive with programs, source code, ship and scenario files, scenario editor, ship database editor, still no docs.

D-CATR Naval
This was to be the latest in the Shipbase series, updated for Windows and with newer better ship data. I got as far as the first public beta release, which works reasonably well for surface games, but doesn't include anything for air.
The three files are all zipped archives: the main game file zip is 523K, the Visual Basic core files are 2,093K, and the source code is 166K. Includes program, ship data files, scenario files, but no documentation.
